A recent paper explored the reported phenomenon of Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria (ROGD), in which people who have not acted gender dysphoric during childhood do so during adolescence or early adulthood. We reviewed the paper last week. After several people complained, PLoS ONE sent the paper back for review and Brown University took down their notice of publication and put up a page stating that the paper was under review. The rationales for those decisions are discussed. 1. Littman, L. 2018....

Pretty much everybody with a background in research knows PLOS, either through its mega journal PLOS ONE (most probably the biggest OA journal), or one of its other journals. However, it was kind of surprising to us when we recognized a while ago that there is also a PLOS podcast, the PLOScast. This podcast, being public for a year now, offers more than a dozen episodes so far, each being an interview with some very interesting guests - some of them well-known all over the place, such as...

Dr. Surridge is helping start PLoS ONE, an effort to democratize scientific contribution, access, review, and merit. This exciting new journal publishes scientifically sound research regardless of subjective criteria such as "likely impact" or "reader interest". Following publication, readers comment, annotate, and rate each paper, adding value to the work as time goes on. Dr. Surridge will talk of the progress to date, and the challenges that lie ahead.

Professor Ben Sheldon, who is the Luc Hoffman Chair of field ornithology and director of the Edward Grey Institute of field ornithology at the University of Oxford tells me what sparked his interest in birds and gives advice to young scientists. Alice Lown tells me about an unassuming little fish commonly found in rock pools around Britain, that is a master of camouflage. I discover that imitation isnât just the highest form of flattery, but is also an indicator of an animalâs learning...
